After reading about the cloud platform from Ravello Systems on twitter and was triggered by their announcement of Inception (beta), as I really like the movie with the same title. I decided to give it a go for myself and write a small blog article about it.

vSphere 6: vMotion enhancements

Don’t we all remember when we witnessed our first vMotion and realized which awesome things this made possible in virtualization?!  In vSphere 6 vMotion even got better!

First I’d like to give a short overview about what was already achieved in previous versions of vSphere.

vSphere 5.0:

  • Multi-NIC vMotion
    Migration time reduced by making Multi-NIC vMotion possible.
  • Stun During Page Send
    Stunned source machine if needed to progress pre-copy phase of vMotion, so the memory modification rate stays below the precopy transfer rate and the pre-copy will eventually succeed.

vSphere 5.1

  • vMotion without shared storage
    Allows for moving the VM simultaneously to another computing & storage resource at the same time.

Review: Zerto Replication for VMware

Recently we’ve visited the Storage Expo (http://www.storage-expo.nl/), to get the latest news on storage and related products. There we visited the stand of Zerto and got a demo of Zerto’s Virtual Replication for VMware product, which looked very promising, but of course we had to test that for ourself in our robertverdam.nl labs.

This article gives a short overview of the installation and configuration process and what you can do with the product once the replications are set-up.

Zerto Virtual Replication needs a routed connection between both sites which isn’t NAT’ed, so we created a OpenVPN connection between two of our lab sites (Lab Verdam & Lab Hagoort). To be exact, we’ve created two tunnels, one from Lab Verdam to a OpenVPN server running on a machine hosted on a DigitalOcean droplet (as a VPN concentrator) and one from Lab Hagoort to this same VPN concentrator.

SDN: VMware NSX (Part 1)

In June 2014 me and my cloudfix co-bloggers attended a seminar about network virtualisation in general and VMware NSX specifically. The seminar also contained a deep-dive into the details of VMware NSX. This deep-dive triggered us to do a blog post series on network virtualisation in general and VMware NSX in detail.

This first article in the series will talk about the VMware NSX globally after which the following will start deep-diving into the specifics about this solutions. I hope you find the series useful in understanding what the VMware NSX solution can do for your organization.

Convert Cisco 1000v from standalone to HA set-up

Recently, working on a customer environment, I discovered that their current Cisco 1000v implementation was not redundant. We quickly decided to convert the standalone setup to a HA-setup. This article shows how this can easily be done.

The current setup was a Cisco 1000v VSM (Virtual Supervisor Module) in L2 Control mode, but the same procedure can be applied to a Cisco 1000v in L3 Control mode.
